Most Students Told Others Prior to Attacking Schools

75% of school shooters told another person, sometimes many people, prior to the attack.

  • In a 1997 school shooting in Alaska, 24 students knew the attack was going to happen and crowded a mezzanine to observe it.  One student even brought a camera!

What can be done to decrease the likelihood of a student attacking a school?

Encourage and incentivize students to share information with school staff, police or parents about potential school attacks.  Instead of a $50 reward for reporting a tip about a potential act of school violence, increase the reward to at least $250 to anyone reporting information that leads to the dismantling of a planned school attack.  Explore community fundraisers or business donations to build a reward fund.  Students who come forward and report potential acts of violence should be hailed as heroes!
